Sleeping Dogs is a third-person open-world game set in Hong Kong. You play as Wei Shen, an undercover cop embedded in the Sun On Yee Triad.
The story is really good. It is not just a GTA copy with an Asian skin. The story, the environment, and the moral conflict between the cop and the criminal set it apart from other open-world games of its era.
The combat definitely makes this game stand out. Sleeping Dogs is about martial-arts-inspired hand-to-hand combat, not shoot-everything gaming. You can grab enemies and throw them on physical items, counterattack in the middle of a combo.
And unlock new strategies as Wei Shen levels up his Triad, Cop, and Face reputation meters. Exploration is rewarded in the open world. Street racing, drug arrests, karaoke mini-games, and side missions that actually connect to the main story.
When I first played Sleeping Dogs, I spent two hours simply walking around the Aberdeen and Central districts before doing a single story mission. The city density is amazing for a game of that era. It looks even better now that the Definitive Edition lighting has been improved.
